When Does Drinking Alcohol Become Sin?

This is a question I hear asked more and more in christian circles. Does the Bible really discourage drinking or does it just discourage getting drunk? I have heard many ideas on this issue but what does the Bible teach? Well, let’s take a look at it.

Proverbs 23:29-32 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. This passage discusses what the effects of drinking are. Yes, it is describing a person who is drunk, but it then says to look not on the wine when, and uses a description to show, it is fermented or gone from non-alcoholic to alcoholic. Now you might say this is just a warning to not get drunk and if you struggle with alcohol to then stay away from it.

The next argument then is that the Bible tells you to drink. 1 Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. Another one I have heard is: Proverbs 31:6-7 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. Or, in John 2 where Jesus turned water into wine for the party, so Jesus was obviously not against drinking. But are these good verses to prove the Bible condones drinking?

When it comes building a doctrine (belief system) from Scripture you can’t just go on the verses that deal with the subject by name. You must also consider verses that deal with the social and spiritual conduct of a believer. How should a christian behave, how should their character be, and does the subject at hand affect them in this regard? Any doctrine we build should have study in the Scripture and lots of prayer behind it, 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

As to not be exhaustive, I will build a brief case instead of delving deep into the subject. So, we know that being drunk is a sin, the Bible is very clear on that, but what about a drink or two? 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient (profitable or good): all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power (control) of any. In the christian life we should be under no other influence then that of the Holy Spirit. If we are under the influence of something other than God it can lead us where we shouldn’t be in both our private and public lifestyle. In other words, I shouldn’t allow myself to be altered in mind or spirit, I am talking about outside the realm of medical treatment here. Obviously when I am drunk my mind is altered, so the question for the christian is “when does alcohol alter my mind and have an effect on me?”

Fortunately, science can shed some light on the subject. In an article by Yahoo Health called What Happens to Your Body Within an Hour of Drinking a Beer, published on Aug. 18, 2015, it states in a paragraph: Although you won’t exactly be hanging from the restaurant chandelier after having a single beer, you do start to lose your inhibitions after just one. “You get more garrulous, talk a lot more, and are more likely to make a social interaction, such as going over to a colleague you’ve been wanting to meet and introducing yourself,” National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism director George Koob, PhD, tells Yahoo Health. “That’s why it’s a social lubricant.”

It is scientifically proven that one beer will alter your mind and your mood. If that is the case and a christian should, at the very least, avoid being under the influence or power of something outside of the Holy Spirit, then a christian should avoid alcohol. The Bible says: 1 Peter 1:15-16 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation (lifestyle); Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. In the Old Testament God commanded Israel to be holy as He was holy over a dozen times. Alcohol does not lead to holy living.

Also, there is the command in the Old Testament that the priest was not to touch any form of alcohol before going into the tabernacle and later the temple as God might strike them dead. Leviticus 10:8-10 And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying, Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean; God required holiness and right discernment from the priest so he would not only understand, but also represent, the Scriptures in a proper way when he went into the temple of God. There is a distinct difference put forth between those who have alcohol in their system and those who don’t. Also, notice it doesn’t say drunk on; it says do not drink period. So this was God’s standard for the priest; how then does this effect the christian? Simple we are priests before God and are the temple of God. 1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Revelation 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

In conclusion, I believe that we can take it the Bible does NOT condone any type of drinking for the christian as it will affect our discernment and our spirit. In our society, we no longer need to take alcohol for infirmities as we have made many medicinal advances. My honest opinion is that it is just best for a christian to avoid alcohol completely so they can have the full filling of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:15-20 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
